SAN DIEGO – San Diego State shut out Brigham Young and Southern Utah to claim the 30th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (8-3) first beat the Cougars (5-4), 3-0, before run-ruling the Thunderbirds (1-8), 10-0, in five innings in the nightcap.
After falling to BYU, 3-0, in the tournament opener on Thursday night, SDSU won four straight to close it out by a combined score of 21-6. San Diego State's 4-1 record bested Brigham Young (3-2) by a game.
In the opener, the Aztecs road the arm of Hannah Johnson in a 3-0 victory, handing the Cougars their first shutout of the season. Johnson, who missed last year after tearing her ACL, retired the first 12 batters she faced before issuing a leadoff walk to Arissa Paulson in the top of the fifth inning. One batter later, Bridget Fleener broke up the no-hit bid with a single through the right side. For the game, Johnson allowed just two hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out a career-high six batters. It was the first shutout of her career for Johnson, who played at Cal State Fullerton in 2018. She improved to 3-1 on the season with a 1.38 ERA.
Shelby Thompson hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the third to get SDSU on the scoreboard.
San Diego State added to its lead in the sixth when Thompson led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Taylor Adams through the left side. Adams later scored on a single by Alexa Schultz.
Thompson led the Aztec offense with two hits, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, while Schultz and Jillian Celis also chipped in with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, SDSU banged out 11 hits, scored all 10 of its runs in the first three innings, and used the arms of Maggie Balint and Karina Faasisila to down SUU, 10-0, in five innings.
Kelsey Munoz and Shelby Thompson each drove in four runs apiece to pace San Diego State. Munoz was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first inning, a run and four RBIs, while Thompson finished 1-for-2 with a three-run home run in the third, three runs, four RBIs and a walk.
Alizae Umi added two hits and two runs, Riley Thies had two hits and a run, and Maddi Ayers doubled and walked in her first start of the season.
The offense was plenty for the 1-2 punch of Balint (2-2) and Faasisila. Balint allowed just one hit - a leadoff single in the fourth inning - and no walks over four innings, while striking out seven of the 13 batters she faced. Faasisila, meanwhile, gave up two singles in a scoreless inning of relief, while striking out two.
