LA QUINTA, Calif. – Sophomore Leo Oyo (Tokyo) leads The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab after firing a 3-under-par 68 for the second consecutive day Tuesday on the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST.
Oyo, who was tied for fifth place entering the day, led by as many as four strokes after a birdie on the par-5 12th hole, but triple-bogeyed the par-5 16th to halt his momentum. He parred the final two holes and at 6-under leads a group of seven by two strokes. Oyo birdied the second and third holes, and eagled the eighth, before birdieing No. 11 and No. 12. His only blemish on the day was the triple bogey on the 16th, a hole he eagled Monday in the first round.
Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand), meanwhile, rallied from a 4-over 75 on Monday to card a 4-under 67 in the second round today, which was tied for the second-lowest score among the 79 players in the tournament. The junior birdied each of the first three holes and six on the day against two bogeys to move from a tie for 54th to a tie for 24th after 36 holes.
Juniors Christian Banke (Danville, Calif.) and Steve Sugimoto (San Diego) each shot an even-par 71, while classmate Callum Bruce (Banff, Scotland) was a shot back as the trio combined to go 6-under on the back nine with no bogeys.
Banke came back from a front-nine 38 with birdies on No. 12, No. 15 and No. 16 to get back to even par for the day. Through 36 holes, Banke is tied for 16th at 2-under 140.
Sugimoto, meanwhile, birdied the ninth, 10th and 18th to match Banke for the round, and is now tied for 70th.
Bruce finished at 1-over-par for the day, logging three birdies, 12 pars, two bogeys and a double bogey. He's tied for 53rd at 5-over 147 entering Wednesday's final round.
Altogether, the Aztecs vaulted eight places up the leaderboard with a 7-under-par 277, which was the second-best team round and 10 strokes better than Monday's opening round. SDSU is tied for third with No. 22 UCLA at 4-under 564, trailing only No. 16 Texas (-14) and No. 1 Pepperdine (-9). Only No. 9 Texas Tech (-3) and No. 13 SMU (-1) are also under par after 36 holes of play.
The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab wraps up Wednesday with the final round, as San Diego State tees off alongside No. 1 Pepperdine, No. 16 Texas and No. 22 UCLA, starting at 8:40 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
