SAN DIEGO – After a nearly two-week hiatus, the San Diego State men's tennis team jumps back into action this weekend when it hits the road for a pair matches at No. 8 Stanford and Mountain West rival Boise State.
The Aztecs will square off against the Cardinal on Friday, Feb. 21 at Taube Family Tennis Center, beginning at 3 p.m. PT, while their conference opener vs. the Broncos is slated for a noon MT/11 a.m. PT start on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex.
A link to streaming video for the San Diego State-Stanford match will be available on GoAztecs.com, where one can also access live scoring for the SDSU-Boise State clash.
The Aztecs (2-4) have been idle since Feb. 8, when they dropped a 6-1 decision to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. SDSU fell short in a closely contest doubles point before losing five of six singles matches, with Arnaud Restifo netting the only victory for the Scarlet and Black.
Restifo has won two straight to raise his dual-match record to 3-2, while Fabian Roensdorf, David Hough and Jan Kirchhoff have each recorded a pair of victories this spring. In addition, Kirchhoff has combined with Rafael Gonzalez Almazan for two wins in doubles competition.
San Diego State has garnered two Mountain West Player of the Week awards already this spring, with Hough and Ignacio Martinez collecting certificates for their huge roles in the Aztecs' wins over UC San Diego and UC Irvine, respectively.
Stanford (7-3) is seeking to break a two-match losing streak after falling to No. 1 USC and then-No. 4 Texas at the National Indoor Team Championships, held Feb. 14-16 in Madison, Wis. The Cardinal boast three nationally ranked singles players in Alexandre Rotsaert (No. 5), Axel Geller (No. 28) and Sangeet Sridhar (No. 75).
Rotsaert has seen action exclusively in the No. 2 singles position, logging a 5-3 record in dual-match play, while Geller sports a modest 2-4 mark at No. 1, with all six decisions featuring nationally ranked opponents. Elsewhere, Sridhar is 4-2 in the third slot and picked up another win at No. 2.
In addition, Rotsaert and Tomas Kopczynski have joined forces to post a 6-3 doubles record this spring playing primarily in the No. 3 spot.
The Aztecs have come up empty in nine previous encounters against Stanford since 1989, including a 4-0 setback in the last meeting between the two squads on March 29, 2017 at Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club.
San Diego State will lock horns with their first conference opponent this spring when they travel to the Gem State on Sunday. Boise State owns a 6-3 record after suffering a 4-0 shutout at San Francisco in their last outing on Feb. 16. Prior to their match with the Aztecs, the Broncos will host Louisiana on Saturday.
Individually, Kyryll Kryvchun has compiled a 6-2 record this spring at the No. 1 spot on the Boise State singles ladder, while Simon Arca Costas is 6-3 in dual matches, alternating between the second, third and fourth positions.
Additionally, Arca Costas has combined with Blake Bayldon to log a 6-2 record at No. 1 doubles this spring.
The Aztecs are 9-10 against Boise State in program history after blanking the Broncos 4-0 at home last year. SDSU captured the first two doubles matches and claimed the first three decisions in singles, including two by Restifo and Gonzalez Almazan, to complete the whitewash.
Following this weekend's action, San Diego State returns home to host UC Davis at Aztec Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 28, starting at 3 p.m. PT.
