ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Aztec track and field team completed the second day of the Mountain West Indoor Championships and had 14 athletes qualify for Saturday's finals. Through five events, the Aztecs set in fourth place with a chance an opportunity to gain ground Saturday in the pole vault and sprints.
Three Aztecs had the top time in their prelim event Friday. Danae Dyer tied her PR in the 60m hurdles and finished in 8.24 seconds. Sakura Roberson had the fastest time in the 400m (53.97) and Nyjari McNeil won the 400m prelims with a time of 2:10.00.
In the 60m dash, a trio of freshmen qualified for tomorrow's finals along with Callista Fletcher. Jada Moore had the third fastest time (7.50), Tiana Osk Whitworth, Fletcher and Alexus Alexander all finished in 7.54 good for sixth, seventh and eighth. It was a season-best time for Whitworth and Alexander.
In the 200m dash, Dyer PR'd with a time of 23.84, the fifth best time in school history, and finished in fourth. Also qualifying for the finals were Moore (5th, 24.09) and Whitworth (6th, 24.18). The Aztecs had runners place ninth (Jalyn Harris, 24.25), 10th (Neele Schuten, 24.29) and 11th (Callista Fletcher, 24.32) as well, just missing sending a huge Aztec contingent to the finals.
Joining Roberson in the 400m finals will be Jalyn Harris, who finished third with a time of 54.65 and Maya Brosch who set a new PR (55.34) and came in fifth.
Fresh off strong performances in the pentathlon, Neele Schuten and Asia Smith qualified for the 60m hurdles finals. Coming in behind Dyer was Schuten in fourth (8.45) and Smith in seventh (8.61).
UP NEXT
The Aztecs wrap up the Mountain West Indoor Championships Saturday with the finals in the high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault, triple jump, 400m, 60m, 800m, 200m, shot put and 4x400m relay. The competition begins at 8:30 a.m. PT and the last race, the 4x400m relay, is scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
