SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team earned its first sweep win of the season, topping the UC Riverside Highlanders 7-0 Tuesday at Aztec Tennis Center.
 
The Aztecs started the day off with a sweep of the doubles point. On court one, senior Tamara Arnold and junior Alicia Melosch topped UC Riverside's Tia Elpusan and Hanh Pham 6-0 while junior Regina Pitts and senior Nnena Nadozie bested the Highlanders' Mahli Silpachai and Natalie Shamma 6-2 on court two. Senior Abbie Mulbarger and freshman Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer closed out doubles play with a 7-5 victory on court three over UCR's Sofia Lazzaroni and Serina Saltzen.
 
In singles play, Melosch recorded the first Aztecs' win on court five with a 6-1, 6-1 topping of Saltzen. Nadozie followed with a two-set victory on court three, defeating Shamma 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Cécile Morin secured the match victory on court four with a 7-6 (3), 6-1, 10-7 win over Pham. Arnold met Elpusan for the second time throughout the match and brought home a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court one. In her first taste of collegiate singles action, Pohrer topped UCR's Syndey Tran 6-1, 6-2. Pitts finished the Aztecs' singles play with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win on court two over Riverside's Silpachai.
 
THE STAT
The sweep win is the first of the spring 2021 season for the Aztecs. SDSU lasted swept an opponent on March 11, 2020, with a 7-0 win over Youngstown State.

"The Aztecs played well today in match three of the season—their best effort of the year so far," noted head coach Peter Mattera. "We are looking to taking another step forward Thursday. We were really solid in doubles play and great in singles action against a gutty Riverside team."
