CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The San Diego State men's golf team holds a 14-stroke lead after the first day of the suspended Wyoming Cowboy Classic Monday at the par-72, 7,334-yard Whirlwind Golf Club. Three Aztecs will have to play their 18th hole Tuesday before beginning the subsequent final round.
SDSU, which is 28th in the latest Golfstat computer rankings, has all five players in the top 20, including three in the top 10. At 27-under par, San Diego State leads Colorado (-13), which also didn't finish the second round, by 14 strokes. No. 36 Stanford and San Diego each completed its day and are tied for third at 11-under 565, while Loyola Marymount and Wyoming are each at 8-under par with one hole still to be played Tuesday morning.
Steve Sugimoto and Callum Bruce each beat the darkness and are tied for third and tied for fifth, respectively, at 8-under 136 and 7-under 137, while Puwit Anupansuebsai is tied with Bruce in fifth with one hole still to be played.
Sugimoto opened with a 7-under 65 and was tied for the first-round lead with Loyola Marymount's Riley Lewis and Cameron Meeks. His collegiate career-low round started out with a bang as he birdied seven of the first 14 holes, including a three-hole stretch on the par-5, 611-yard 12th, par-4, 441-yard 13th and par-4, 389-yard 14th. Sugimoto parred the par-3, 176-yard 15th, but double-bogeyed the par-4, 428-yard 16th. Sugimoto, however, rebounded with consecutive birdies on the par-5, 560-yard 17th and the par-4, 450-yard 18th to card his 65. In the second round, he recorded five birdies, including the final two holes once again, offset by four bogeys for a 1-under 71. At 9-under par, Lewis and Meeks are one shot ahead of Sugimoto and Colorado's Victor Bjorlow.
Bruce, meanwhile, posted rounds of 69 and 68, and is tied with Anupansuebsai and Stanford's Barclay Brown at 7-under par. In the opening round, Bruce posted six birdies and three bogeys. His 68 in the second round was even more impressive as he had to overcome a triple bogey on the par-4, 462-yard fourth hole. Bruce responded with five birdies and an eagle on No. 17.
Anupansuebsai opened with a bogey-free 6-under 66 with birdies on the par-4, 337-yard fifth and the par-4, 402-yard eighth on the front nine, and four on the back nine, including the 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th. In the second round, the reigning Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Year recorded three birdies and two bogeys, and is at 1-under with the 18th hole to be finished tomorrow morning.
Youssef Guezzale and Zihao Jin are tied for 11th after each carded 4-under 68s and were at even-par through 17 holes before darkness set in. Guezzale had four birdies in the first round and eagled No. 17, against two bogeys. He has four birdies and four bogeys in the second round, and will finish on the par-4, 413-yard first hole tomorrow morning.
Jin carded five birdies in the first round and just one bogey on the par-3, 180-yard sixth hole. Like Guezzale, Jin has four birdies and four bogeys in the second round, and will play the 18th tomorrow morning before beginning the final round.
The rest of the second round is set for 7 a.m. PT Tuesday, while the final 18 will start at 7:30 a.m. PT.
