SAN DIEGO -- As the NBA regular season came to an end, a pair of former Aztecs qualified for postseason play.
In the NBA, Malachi Flynn (2020) started all four games for Toronto in the final week of their season. Flynn averaged 20.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. He set a career high with 26 points on Friday before scoring 27 in Sunday's season finale. Flynn finished his rookie season averaging 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.1 blocks. For Charlotte, Jalen McDaniels (2018-2019) also started all four games this week. McDaniels put up 13.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.3 blocks per game for the week. He had his second double-double of the season on Saturday with 15 points and 10 rebounds. In his second season, McDaniels averaged 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks. His Hornets team is battling Indiana in the first Eastern Play-In game on Tuesday night. Kawhi Leonard (2010-2011) started in two games for the Los Angeles Clippers last week, both wins. He averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 1.5 steals. In his 10th season, Leonard put up 24.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. As the fourth seed in the Western Conference, the Clippers will battle Dallas in the first round of the playoffs.
In Major League Baseball, Ty France (2013-2015) started three games last week for Seattle. He played first base, second base, and designated hitter. France walked twice, singled, and scored a run. On the season, he is batting .229, with a .366 on base percentage, three homers, 14 RBIs and 21 runs scored. The Mariners placed France on the 10-day IL on Friday with left wrist inflammation. Seattle remains in third place, four games behind Oakland in the AL West. Stephen Strasburg (2007-2009) is rehabbing in Triple-A as he nears a return to Washington from right shoulder inflammation. On the season, Strasburg is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in 10 innings. The Nationals are in fifth place, four games behind New York in the NL East. Colorado rookie Alan Trejo (2015-2017) has started three of his six games last week. In those games, he singled twice, walked, doubled, drove in a run, and scored twice while playing second base and shortstop. This season, he is batting .222, with a .275 on base percentage, a pair of RBIs, and six runs scored. The Rockies are in fifth place in the NL West, 10.5 games behind San Francisco.
On the PGA Tour, J.J. Spaun (2009-2012) tied for 47th at the AT&T Byron Nelson at 11-under-par. Scott Piercy (1999-2001) did not make the cut in the event. Next weekend, Xander Schauffele (2013-2015) will compete in the PGA Championship in Kiawah Island, S.C. Schauffele is ranked fourth in the world and in the FedEx Cup.
