BREMERTON, Wash. -- Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) is in a tie for fifth place after two rounds of the Husky Invitational for the San Diego State men's golf team Monday on the par-72, 7,155-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Sugimoto is tied with Boise State's Joe Neuheisel and Oregon State's Brandon Eyre for fifth at 6-under-par 138, two shots back from Saint Mary's Mikey Slesinski, Seattle's Jack Rahon and Washington's Chuan-Tai Lin, who are each at 8-under 136. RJ Manke leads the 80-player field at -9.
Sugimoto opened with a 4-under-par 68 in the first round and came back for a 2-under 70 in the second 18. He sank six birdies with two bogeys in the first round, and two birdies and 16 pars in his final 18 of the day.
Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) is tied for 32nd at even-par (144), starting with a 69 and following with a 75. The highlight of the day came in the first round on the par-4, 325-yard 18th hole when Anupansuebsai drove the green and sank the eagle putt. He finished with three birdies, two bogeys and the aforementioned eagle. In his 75, Anupansuebsai recorded three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.
Liam Koeneke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) is tied for 52nd in his first day in the Aztec starting lineup at 5-over 149, going 72 and 77.
Freshman Shea Lague (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) and Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS), meanwhile, are tied for 62nd at 7-over 151. Lague rallied back from a 5-over 77 with a 2-over 74, while Guezzale logged a 75 and a 76.
As a team, SDSU is 11th out of 16. San Diego State carded a 4-under 284 and was in seventh after the first round but slipped four spots to 11th following a 7-over 295 in the second round. Tournament host Washington is comfortably in the lead at 23-under 553, 13 shots clear of Boise State (-10). Oregon (-9) Oregon State (-7), Missouri (-6) and Nevada (-6) are in striking distance of the Broncos for second place.
Over on the Cascade Course at Golf Mountain Golf Club for the Husky Individual Invitational, freshman Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) is tied for seventh out of 45 entrants at 4-under 140 with rounds of 69 and 71. Other Aztecs competing in the individual event include senior Joey Moore (Billings, Mont.) (T-27th, +2), sophomore Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman HS) (T-30th, +3), freshman Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) (38th, +10) and sophomore Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) (40th, +14). Oregon's Greyson Leach leads the Husky Individual Invitational at 8-under 136.
