SAN DIEGO – San Diego State picked up a pair of singles victories in the first day of the SDSU Fall Classic I at the Aztec Tennis Center Friday. The event, which includes women's tennis student-athletes from six institutions (CSUN, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, San José State, UTEP and San Diego State) continues tomorrow and concludes Sunday.
In the Scarlet Singles Flight, the topflight of the event, senior Alicia Melosch posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kathleen Percegona of UTEP in the quarterfinal round. Melosch advances to the semifinal round where she will face Oleksandra Andrieiva of San José State tomorrow.
In the Black Flight, senior Agustina Rimoldi Godoy won a three-set thriller over Elena Dibattista of UTEP, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to tomorrow's semifinal round. Rimoldi Godoy will face Nikola Homolkova of Long Beach State.
Three other Aztec players suffered first-round singles defeats. Junior Julia Jordan, playing in the topflight, dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse. Junior Cécile Morin won eight games in her first match of the event but lost, 6-3, 7-5, in the Black Flight to Arina Babkova of Long Beach State. Sophomore Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer dropped a match to CSUN's Sasha Turchak, 6-4, 6-1. All three will be back in action tomorrow in the backdraw.
The Aztecs will also have a pair of doubles teams in action tomorrow, with Melosch and junior Julia Jordan teaming up in the top bracket and Morin and Rimoldi Godoy will compete in the Black Bracket.
Day two action gets underway at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Aztec Tennis Center.
