SAN DIEGO – San Diego State senior Bunyawi Thamchalwat won a pair of singles matches and teamed up with senior Tamara Arnold in doubles to advance in the main draw of both events at the ITA Division I Women's Southwest Regional Championships on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center.

"It was another good day of competitive tennis with matches against some of the top players not only in the region but the entire country," SDSU head coach Peter Mattera said. "Bunyawi is alive in the singles and, along with Tamara, in the doubles main draw and the rest of the team is competing at a high level. That bodes well for a successful spring season."

Thamchalwat won a pair of straight-set singles matches, dropping a grand total of eight games in four sets Friday to advance to the quarterfinals. The Aztec senior defeated a pair of seeded players 17th-seeded Elise Wagle of UCLA, 6-1, 6-2, (players seeded nine through 16 and 17 through 32 are not distinguished by seeds but are placed in the bracket alphabetically in those seeded positions) and 9th-seeded (9-16) Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-2.

Thamchalwat faces 17th-seeded Snow Han of USC tomorrow at noon PT.

In doubles action, Thamchalwat and Arnold, seeded fourth in the event, advanced to the round of 32 with a victory over UCSD's Anu Bhadada and Anna Snissarenko, 6-4. They advance to the round of 16 where they will face UCLA's Sasha Vagramov and Ava Catanzarite. That match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PT

The event, which is co-hosted by San Diego State and San Diego and continues through Monday, includes 16 schools from the region and features some of the top singles and doubles teams in the nation competing in one 128-person singles draw and one 64-teams doubles draw.

In non-bracketed matches, San Diego State picked up three straight-set singles wins, with Alicia Melosch, Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer and Regina Pitts all recording victories.
