SAN DIEGO – San Diego State volleyball head coach Brent Hilliard has announced the addition of Elly Schraeder, a 6-2 middle blocker who joins the Aztec program after playing the last two seasons at the University of San Diego.
A native of Athol, Idaho, Schraeder has enrolled at SDSU for the spring semester and will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Scarlet and Black.
"I've had the opportunity to see Elly perform many times, and she is the prototypical middle for our team moving forward," Hilliard said. "She is a great athlete who outworks her competition by constantly being available in transition. She will fit in seamlessly with our current team as she brings an energy that is infectious. We are extremely pleased that she could join us this spring, so she can familiarize herself with her new Aztec family."
Schraeder was a member of two Torero squads that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including a second-round appearance during the 2021 spring campaign. While at USD, she appeared in 20 matches with 13 starts, totaling 40 kills and 65 blocks in 54 sets played.
During her first collegiate campaign, Schraeder started all 10 matches she played, ranking second in the West Coast Conference with a team-high 1.30 blocks per set (43 overall), highlighted by a career-high seven block assists in the opener of a weekend series at Gonzaga.
Prior to her enrollment at USD, Schraeder was a prep star at Coeur d'Alene High School, where she was twice named the 5A Northwest Inland Empire League's Most Valuable Player, helping her squad to consecutive fourth-place finishes in the Idaho state championships in 2018 and 2019.
Following her senior year, Schraeder was named the North Idaho Hall of Fame's High School Volleyball Athlete of the Year after netting Idaho 5A/4A Girls Volleyball Athlete of the Year honors in 2019 and 2020.
Along with her success on the court, Schraeder excelled in the classroom as a prep, earning the Distinguished Team Scholastic Award all four years to go with academic honor roll recognition. She intends to major in environmental sustainability at San Diego State.
Schraeder becomes the fourth student-athlete to commit to the SDSU volleyball program for the 2022 campaign after high school standouts Madison Corf, Kat Cooper and Cara Braun signed National Letters of Intent last November.
