SAN DIEGO – Winners of two of the last three Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships, the San Diego State Aztecs will look to make it three of the last four when they compete for the league's 2021-22 title in College Station, Texas, from Wednesday, Feb. 16 to Saturday, Feb. 19.
Continuing its success of the last nine seasons, SDSU again completed a dual-meet season without a blemish on its record, posting a 12-0 mark throughout their 2021-22 campaign. The Aztecs improved their dual-meet record to 95-2 since January of 2013 and extended its dual-meet win streak to 38 straight dating back to 2018.
The 1-meter diving competition opens the Championships on Wednesday and reigning Mountain West Diver of the Week Ximena Lechuga Gonzalez, a senior from Tijuana, Mexico, is set to lead the Aztecs who have captured the overall title in five of the last 11 years.
Lechuga Gonzalez holds the Aztec record in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions and held the platform record until two weeks ago, when freshman Valentina Lopez Arevalo bested Lechuga Gonzalez's top mark, a 292.30 with a 294.68. Lopez Arevalo has earned Mountain West Diver and Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors this year
The Aztec swimmers are led by a trio of seniors.
Klara Thormalm, a native of Vetlanda, Sweden, has B-cut times in the 50 Free and 100 and 200 Breaststroke. The owner of ## SDSU best times, was twice honored as a Mountain West Swimmer of the Week this year. She owns the fastest times in SDSU history in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and a top-10 time in the 50 Free.
Clarksburg, California's Kristina Murphy has recorded B-cut times in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke as well as the 200 and 400 Individual Medley. She owns Aztec top-10 times in the 200 Breaststroke and 200 and 400 IM.
Sammy Geyer, from Cheyenne, Wyo., has a B-cut in the 100 Breaststroke and earned Mountain West Swimmer of the Week and is on the top-10 list for San Diego State in the 50 Free and 100 Breaststroke.
Other swimmers with top-10 time in Aztec history are Lizzie Menzmer, in the 50 Free and 100 Fly, Mia Ryan, in 200 and 500 Free, both Evonne Stehr and Riley Tapley in the 200 Back, Wilma Jonhansson in the 200 Fly and Paige Mitchell in the 500 Free.
