ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Aztec track and field team continued competition at the Mountain West Indoor Championships Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Dejanae Thompson finished third in the long jump competition, and eight athletes advanced to the finals of their respective events on Friday.
Thompson, a San Diego native, and Morse High School graduate jumped over 20 feet for the first time in her career on Friday. She set a new PR of 20-01.50, good for third place overall, shattering her previous best by over a foot. Thompson's previous best was 19-01.50. Junior Vanessa Spizewski also scored points for the Aztecs, she jumped 19-00.00 even to secure eighth place in the event and earned a point for the Aztecs in the process.
In the high jump, Jade Cany and Jenna Fee Feyerabend both earned points for the Aztecs. Cany and Fee Feyerabend both cleared 5-05.75 to claim seventh and eighth respectively, earning three points for SDSU.
Jaylen Harris put up a solid mark in the 60m dash. She posted a 7.51, won her heat, and advanced to the finals. Jada Moore also qualified for the finals by finishing second in her heat, and ran a 7.50, good for the third fastest time of the day.
In the 60m hurdles, Danae Dyer qualified for the finals. She won her heat in 8.41, the second fastest time in prelims, and advanced to the finals.
Three Aztecs advanced to the finals in the 200m dash. Jada Moore ran 24.07 to win her heat and advance to the finals. She posted the third fastest time in prelims. Jaylen Harris posted a 24.10 to win her heat and advance to the finals. Aisha Watt also advanced to tomorrows finals, she ran 24.25, the sixth fastest time of the day.
SDSU had three athletes competing in the 400m dash. Sakura Roberson's 54.86 mark won her heat, was the second fastest time in prelims, and advanced her to the final tomorrow. Nyjari McNeil also won her heat in 56.14, but her time came up just outside the top eight, she finished 10th overall.
As for the 800m run, Lauren Harper won her heat and posted the fastest overall time in prelims, she ran 2:10.59 to qualify for the finals.
