COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State softball's Mac Barbara (Long Beach, Calif.) and Bella Espinoza (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each received weekly accolades from the Mountain West on Tuesday. Barbara was named the MW Player of the Week for the first time of her career, while Espinoza was named the MW Freshman of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season.
The duo helped the Aztecs (19-10, 3-0 MW) to a series sweep over Colorado State last weekend. SDSU outscored and outhit the Rams, 21-2 and 19-6, respectively, posting a 0.74 team ERA and holding CSU to a .094 opponent average.
Barbara reached base safely in all nine plate appearances, going 5-for-5 with two home runs (including a grand slam), a double, triple, eight RBIs, three runs and four walks (two intentional, all four as four-pitch walks), owning a 2.800 slugging percentage. Barbara was 3-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBIs in SDSU's 6-2 win over CSU in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday, before going 1-for-1 with two intentional walks in San Diego State's 2-0 victory in the nightcap. On Sunday, Barbara was 1-for-1 with a grand slam and two walks on eight pitches in SDSU's 13-0, five-inning victory to complete the sweep.
On the season, Barbara leads the team in batting average (.422), home runs (12), RBIs (40), hits (38), total bases (84), slugging percentage (.933) and on-base percentage (.500). Barbara's 12 home runs in 29 games are already the ninth most in San Diego State single-season history. Barbara needs 10 more at-bats to qualify (100) for the Aztec percentage records, where she would be first in slugging percentage (.933) and OPS percentage (1.433), third in average (.422) and fourth in on-base percentage (.500). Among the NCAA leaders, Barbara ranks in a tie for third in RBIs (40), tied for fourth in home runs (12), fifth in total bases (84), 13th in slugging percentage (.933) and tied for 17th in hits (38).
Espinoza, meanwhile, was 6-for-10 (.600) with five runs, a walk and three stolen bases over the three games. Espinoza was 4-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases in SDSU's 6-2 win over the Rams in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday. In the nightcap, she walked and scored a run in San Diego State's 2-0 victory. Espinoza finished her weekend on Sunday by going 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base in a 13-0, five-inning run-rule win.
On the season, Espinoza is hitting .409 (36-for-88) with team highs of 23 runs and 10 stolen bases, while adding six RBIs and six walks for a .447 on-base percentage. Espinoza's 36 hits are the fourth most in the country among freshmen, tied for 33rd overall and fourth in the MW.
