CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Freshman Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) tied for ninth to pace the San Diego State men's golf team on the final day of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Tuesday. Competing as an individual, Townsend finished at 6-under 210 for the three rounds at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club.
The ninth-place effort was tied with LSU's Cohen Trolio for the best finish by a freshman in the 95-man field. Additionally, Townsend's 6-under 210 bettered the 25 other competitors from the Mountain West.
After consecutive 3-under 69s on Monday, Townsend shot an even-par 72 in today's final round. Starting with a par on the monster par-5, 603-yard 16th hole, Townsend logged three birdies on the day, including the par-5, 513-yard second hole, par-4, 461-yard fourth hole and the par-4, 390-yard 12th hole, offset by three bogeys.
LSU's Nicholas Arcement captured medalist honors at 13-under 203, while Washington's Noah Woolsey and RJ Manke tied for second at 11-under 205.
Also competing as an individual, Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) tied for 18th at 3-under 213 following a 3-under 69 today. Sugimoto started his final round with three straight birdies on No. 8, the par-4, 427-yard ninth and the par-4, 438-yard 10th, then bogeyed No. 11 before birdieing the par-5, 485-yard 14th.
