SAN DIEGO – Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson has announced the signing of Sarah Barcello, a 5-11 guard who has spent the past four years at Marist and averaged a team-high 12.6 points per game in 2020-21 before missing last season due to injury.
"We are thrilled to add Sarah to our program," Terry-Hutson said. "She's a great leader with an awesome work ethic, has a high basketball IQ and gives us more depth on the perimeter."
During her three years of playing at Marist, Barcello (Chandler, Arizona) appeared in 74 games while making 57 starts. She averaged 7.6 points per game over that span and shot 34.9 percent from three, which is top ten all-time at Marist.
"When I stepped foot on the SDSU campus, it just felt like home," Barcello explained. "The weather was amazing, the people were friendly, the coaching staff was outstanding, the facilities were some of the best I've seen, and academics are competitive, yet fair. Once I committed, the immediate bond and feedback I received from some of the players only validated my decision. I'm excited to get to campus, work hard and compete for a championship."
As a junior in 2020-21, she started all 17 games she appeared in and helped the Red Foxes win the MAAC Championship and make the NCAA Tournament. She led Marist in scoring and steals and was top 15 in the MAAC in field goal percentage, which earned her a spot on the All-MAAC Third Team after the season. She scored in double figures 11 times, including a career-high 25 points at Quinnipiac. During the MAAC Championships, she averaged 13.7 points, 4.3 steals and 4.0 rebounds per game.
In 2019-20 as a sophomore, Barcello appeared in 24 games while making 21 starts. She averaged 6.3 points per game on 43.9 shooting from the field in 21.3 minutes. In 2018-19, she shot 41 percent from three and started 19 games while scoring 5.8 points per game. She was named to the MAAC All-Championship team after averaging 9.3 points in the conference tournament.
She will graduate from Marist with a psychology degree, while minoring in social work. She was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team after each of the last three seasons.
She attended high school at Seton Catholic Prep in Chandler, Arizona, where she won three Arizona state championships. She was a two-time Arizona Division II Player of the Year and two-time 4A All-State First-Team selection. She averaged 16.0 points and 6.3 rebounds as a senior and 18.4 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior.
Her older sister Julia was the 2014 Gatorade State Player of the Year and Arizona and went on to play at Colgate while her brother Alex was a standout at BYU after spending two years at Arizona.
Barcello will have two years of eligibility remaining and will be working towards a master's in psychology.
