SAN DIEGO – San Diego State water polo senior Karli Canale, sophomore Laurene Padilla and freshman Rose Kanemy are among 80 players who have been recognized by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) with inclusion on its 2022 Division I All-America Team. The announcement was made from the ACWPC headquarters in Bridgeport, Pa.
The trio all received honorable mention designation after leading the Aztecs to a fourth-place finish in the 2022 Golden Coast Conference (GCC) championship tournament and a No. 21 national ranking in the final ACWPC poll. Among the eight schools which compete in the GCC, the Aztecs' three all-America honors led the conference.
The threesome scored 123 of the team's 296 goals (41.6 percent) and were credited with 105 of SDSU's 249 (42.2 percent) assists in 2022. Among players in the GCC, all three ranked in the top six in assists and the top nine in total points.
Canale has been recognized as an all-American for the second time in her career, after earning the honor in 2021.
In 28 games, the 5-5 driver led San Diego State in points (81), goals (46), steals (50), blocks (8) and was tied for the lead in sprints won (15). She was second in assists (35) and exclusions drawn (22), and third in shots (109). Among Aztecs with anm average of two shot attempts per games played, her .422 shot percentage topped the squad.
In seven GCC games, she ranked first in points (24), steals (18), sprints won (6) and sprint-win percentage (.545) among the Aztecs. She was second in shots (31), goals (12), assists (12), ejections drawn (5) and blocks (1).
An honorable mention All-GCC selection, Canale led the conference in steals, was fifth in goals, sprint wins & sprint win percentage, sixth in points, and seventh in goals among all league performers.
She had eight hat tricks, among 13 multi-goal efforts, and at one point in the season had five consecutive games with multiple goals and in the final three games of her Aztec career, scored five, three and four goals, respectively.
Padilla, a sophomore from Carlsbad, Calif., is one of six Aztecs to appear in all 30 games during 2022 and posted career-highs in nearly every statistical category.
For SDSU, she was second in goals (39), shots (118), blocks (7), and shot percentage (.331) among Aztecs with a minimum average of two shot attempts per games played. Her 34 assists and 74 points were the third most on the team.
The first-team All-GCC performer ranked No. 6 in assists and No. 9 in points among all GCC competitors and in conference games, she was No. 6 in points (23) and No. 8 in win percentage (.286). In those league games, she led San Diego State in assists (13) and blocks (2), was second in points, and third in shots (29) and goals (10).
Among 14 multi-goal games, she recorded five hat tricks including a single-game high four goals against No. 4-ranked UC Davis. Totaling nine multi-assist outings, her six versus No. 25 CSUN, on March 6 at the Aquaplex, are the second most in a game in program history.
Kanemy, a second-team All-GCC performer and GCC All-Freshman Team designee, led all Aztec freshmen and overall was in the top-3 in nearly every statistical category.
The only freshman to compete in each of the team's 30 contests, she led the squad in assists (36) and shots (122) and was second in points (74) and blocks (7). She ranked No. 3 in goals (38) and her .311 shot percentage was the fourth highest on the team among players who averaged a minimum of two shots per game played.
Her 36 assists and 74 points ranked third and eighth in the league, respectively.
In seven GCC games, she produced a team-high 36 shots, 13 goals and two blocks and her .361 shot percentage was the second highest on the team among those who averaged at least three shots per game. In addition, Kanemy's 23 points ranked second on the team and her 10 assists were No. 3 on the squad.
The native of Montreal, ranked sixth and seventh in GCC games in points and assists, respectively.
She finished with nine multi-goal games and had five hat tricks, which included a career-high five goal effort against No. 25 CSUN on March 6 at the Aquaplex. She had 13 multi-assist games with a single-contest best three against Azusa Pacific (March 25) and at Cal State Monterey Bay (March 31).
With Canale, Padilla and Kanemy's honors, this marks the 19th time overall, and 16th time in the last 24 years that two or more Aztecs have earned all-America status and a total of 60 all-America designations have been bestowed on San Diego State players since 1995, the program's first season of competition.
