SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men's basketball players Tahirou Diabate and Joshua Tomaic have been recognized for their work in the classroom, being named to the 2021-22 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court. The announcement was made from the NABC office in Kansas City, Mo.
The NABC Honors Court includes more than 2,000 players from all levels of college basketball who were a junior, senior or graduate student in 2021-22, and finished the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Both Tomaic and Diabate, who wrapped up their college careers last year, were graduate students who majored in homeland security.
Tomaic, a native of Lanzarote, Spain, spent two seasons at San Diego State. He was a two-time Academic All-Mountain West designee as well as a two-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. In his time on The Mesa, he averaged 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor and helping the Aztecs to the 2021 Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles and back-to-back trips to the NCAA tournament.
Diabate spent one season, 2021-22, in the Scarlet and Black. He garnered Academic All-Mountain West and Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors while, per 40 minutes played, averaged 10.0 points and 9.4 rebounds in 25 games. SDSU's appearance in the 2022 NCAA tournament was the Bamako, Mali, native's lone trip to the Big Dance.
Tomaic and Diabate join Malachi Flynn (2020), D'Erryl Williams (2017) and Mehdi Cheriet (2010) as Aztecs who have earned the honor in the last 12 years.
