SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The San Diego State men's golf team finished in eighth place at the competitive Maui Jim Intercollegiate Sunday at the par-70, 7,118-yard Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Aztecs shot a 2-under-par 278 on the final day of the three-round competition, dropping from a tie for fifth and collectively finishing at 24-under 816.
Auburn (-45) led wire-to-wire, while Arizona State (-40), Florida State (-35), Georgia Tech (-34) and Washington (-31) rounded out the top 5. SDSU finished a shot back of Oregon (-25) and just ahead of Arizona (-21).
Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) led San Diego State by finishing in a three-way tie for fifth at 12-under 198. The 198 is tied with three others - Puwit Anupansuebsai (2019 Bill Cullum Invitational), J.J. Spaun (2012 NCAA Stanford Regional) and Todd Baek (2010 Alister Mackenzie Invitational) - for the second-lowest recorded 54-hole score in program history, only trailing Alex Kang's 197 set at the 2010 Alister Mackenzie Invitational. The fourth-place finish was also the highest of his career. Lague, who opened the weekend with a 66 on Friday and a 64 yesterday, carded a 2-under 68 today with three birdies over his final 11 holes after bogeying the par-4, 526-yard seventh.
Senior Youssef Guzzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) and sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), meanwhile, tied for 31st at 3-under 207. Guezzale shot a 2-over 72 today after tying a school record with a 62 on Saturday. He had three birdies in today's final round, three bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 526-yard seventh.
Hastings rallied from a 3-over 38 on the front nine with three birdies on the back nine against one bogey to salvage a 71. Hastings opened with a 69 and 67 over the weekend.
Competing in their first collegiate tournament, freshmen Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) and Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) finished in a tie for 44th and 51st, respectively. Oyama's 72 today had him drop to a 1-under 209, while Chokprajakchat had SDSU's best round of the day at 3-under 67 to finish at even-par 210 for the tournament.
Tennessee's Caleb Surratt earned medalist honors at 18-under 192, beating out runner-up Cole Anderson (-15) of Florida State, and Auburn's Evan Vo (-13) and Georgia Tech's Connor Howe (-13).
The Aztecs next compete at the William H. Tucker Invitational, Sept. 23-24, at UNM's Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
