COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Jessica Kain (Scotts Valley, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first career weekly award for Kain and the first by an Aztec since Elaine Ribeiro received the award on September 22, 2015.
Kain ran 20:46.5 on Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational en-route to a 17th place finish out of 265 runners over the 6k course. Her time not only earned her 17th overall and in the top 6 percent of all finishers, it also placed her atop the Aztecs all-time record book. Her time of 20:46.5 over a full 6K course is the fastest recorded time by an Aztec on the UC Riverside Invitational course in school history. The previous record was set in 2016 by Christine Kent who ran 20:47.75 at the UC Riverside Invitational that season.
At the UC Riverside Invitational San Diego State faced staunch competition, and Kain propelled the Aztecs on the team side to a 14th place showing out of 31 teams. The Aztecs beat the likes of power five conference members Arizona State, California and USC on Saturday.
Kain and the SDSU cross country team are back in action on September 30 when they hit the road for the Joe Paine-Notre Dame Invitational held in South Bend, Indiana.
