NAPA, Calif. – On Saturday, the San Diego State men's tennis team played three singles and two doubles matches at the Silverado Invitational at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., and came away with a win in four of the five in which they competed.
Junior Bora Sengul and sophomore Alexander Mandma each won his singles match and then teamed up in doubles for another win, while sophomore Mathieu Josserand earned the squads third singles victory. All three singles wins came against players from UNLV, with the first set in each match going to a seventh game.
Mandma faced off against Aaron Bailey, winning a hard-fought match 7-5, 6-3.
Inspired by his teammate, Sengul's match versus Eduardo Cohen was also close, with Sengul winning by the same score, 7-5, 6-3.
Even closer than the first two, Josserand went to the tiebreaking third set to claim his win. He took down Milos Dabic, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Fresh off an 8-2 doubles win yesterday, Sengul and Mandma reunited to face San Francisco's Johan Garpered and Nikola Kuraica. The Scarlet and Black duo made it two in a row with an 8-5 decision.
Josserand and Andre Saleh, a junior from Newport Beach, Calif., after not playing doubles yesterday, came together to face a mixed team of Aidan Watt from Saint Mary's and San Francisco's Luka Kalenic. For the first time in the tournament, SDSU was bested, by the score of 8-3.
The Silverado Invitational will conclude Sunday, September 25.
