SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis returned to the court for the first time since their NCAA Tournament appearance in the spring at the USD Intercollegiate Tournament on Thursday morning. The tournament was hosted at the Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of USD.
Three San Diego State student-athletes made their debuts in an Aztec uniform on Thursday. Andreea Velcea a transfer from Florida International University, Andjela Skrobonja another transfer from Florida International University, and Dariya Detkovskaya a transfer from Oklahoma State all made their first appearances for the scarlet and black.
Velcea was the last to play on Friday, but won her match in convincing fashion. The Timisoara, Romania native posted an impressive win in straight sets over Madison Tattini of Utah to move on to the round of 16 to be played on Friday. She posted a 6-3 win in the first set, and followed that up with a dominating 6-1 win in the second set to take the match in straight sets.
Detkovskaya also won her round of 32 match on Thursday morning to move on to the round of 16. She won in dominant fashion as well, only dropping a single game en-route to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mila Stanojevic of Colorado.
The two other Aztecs who played Friday, found things a bit tougher. Against top-notch competition both fought hard in their matches. The first Aztec to compete on Friday was the only returner who was competing on Thursday, Alicia Melosch. She battled back-and-forth with Alana Wolfberg of Oklahoma State, but fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
The final Aztec to suit up on Thursday was Skrobonja, who was also making her Aztec debut, but fell in straight sets as well. A native of Somber, Serbia, Skrobonja forced a tiebreaker in the first set, but came up just short falling 7-6 (4) in the first set, and then fell 6-3 in the second set.
