RENO, Nev. – The San Diego State men's golf team finished in second place at the Wolf Pack Classic Tuesday at the par-72, 7,302-yard Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno, Nevada. The Aztecs shot a 6-under-par 282 on the final day today and finished at 27-under 837 for the tournament.
SDSU, which entered the final round in second, was only beaten by defending champion New Mexico (-31), which fired the low round of the contenders at 13-under 275, moving from third to first. Brigham Young (-22) was a distant third, while San Diego (-21) and San Francisco (-20) rounded out the top 5.
Freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) and sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each tied for eighth at 7-under 209 to pace San Diego State. Oyama carded a 3-under 69 in today's final round. Starting his day on the 12th hole, Oyama got to 4-under with a birdie on the par-4, 395-yard 15th and the par-5, 560-yard 18th, and an eagle on the par-5, 515-yard first. A bogey on the par-4, 396-yard ninth was his only blemish on the scorecard as he recorded his first career top-10 finish. Lague shot a 2-under 70 Tuesday with five birdies, including three over his final four holes.
Sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), meanwhile, tied for 15th at 5-under 211 following a 3-under 69 today. Starting on the 13th, Hastings birdied two of his first six holes - No. 15 and No. 18 - had nine straight pars, and birdied both the par-4, 460-yard 10th and the par-3, 184-yard 12th with a bogey sandwiched in the middle on the par-4, 437-yard 11th.
Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) shot a 4-over 76 today to drop from a tie for 11th to a tie for 34th at 1-under 215 for the tournament. Guezzale did not have a birdie on the day, grinding out 14 pars with four bogeys.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) tied for 39th at 1-over 217 after shooting a 2-over 74 today. Thongsom got to 2-under for the round with three straight birdies on the par-4, 432-yard sixth, par-5, 598-yard seventh and par-4, 426-yard eighth, but double bogeyed the ninth and added two bogeys on his back nine.
Freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) tied for 50th at 4-over 220, carding a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Kowack had three bogeys after his lone birdie on No. 15.
New Mexico's Bastien Amat captured medalist honors at 14-under 202, following a 6-under 66 on Tuesday. Amat finished three strokes ahead of San Francisco's Benjamin Patridge (-11) and UNLV's Caden Fioroni (-11).
SDSU will begin its spring campaign at the Southwestern Invitational, Jan. 30-Feb. 1, at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, California.
