SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis wrapped up their first day of competition at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Thursday. Six Aztecs collected singles wins and two will move on to the round of 32 on Friday.
The morning matches were headlined by several opening round wins for the Aztecs. Dariya Detkovskaya found success in varying the depth of her attacks and defeated Valentina Del Marco of Grand Canyon University in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Cecile Morin faced off against Grace Gamal of UCSD, winning a gritty 6-4, 7-6 (4) match over the course of two hours. Alicia Melosch kept the momentum going for the Aztecs, closing out her match in dominant fashion, 7-5, 6-2 against Katelyn Vu of UCSD. Andreea Velcea followed suit with a convincing win of her own, beating Cal State Fullerton's Camila Garcia, 6-3, 6-0. To conclude the morning matches, Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer battled hard but ultimately fell to Vilcek Ana of Hawai'i in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
The Aztecs' afternoon yielded several more wins as well. Tamara Arnold, who received a bye in the first round, led the Aztecs with a strong 6-0, 6-0 performance to beat Mariia Nikitash from Cal State Fullerton. Andjela Skrobanja offered powerful groundstrokes to control the pace of her match and beat Diana Yanotovskaya of Cal State Fullerton in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Elsewhere in singles play, Detkovskaya dropped her match 6-4, 6-2 to Veronica Miroshnichenko of Loyola Marymount. Morin lost to Isabelle Lee of USC 6-3, 6-0, Melosch fell short to Domenika Turkovic of Arizona State 6-3, 6-3, and Velcea dropped the last Aztec match of the day 6-2, 6-1 to Grace Piper of USC.
Morin and Velcea played the only doubles match for the Aztecs on Thursday, a match in which they fell short to Justine Dondonay and Doga Akyurek from Long Beach State, 8-5. The seeded pairs of Melosch and Arnold as well as Andjela Skrobonja and Detkovskaya will play tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT.
