MALIBU, Calif. – The San Diego State men's tennis team won five singles matches on Saturday, the third day of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on the campus of Pepperdine University.
Seven Aztecs competed in eight singles matches on their final day in Malibu.
UCLA's Jeffrey Fradkin defeated Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice on Thursday, but Andre Saleh avenged his teammate on Saturday. Saleh claimed the first set 6-4 before Fradkin retired to give Saleh the win. In his second match, Saleh battled Arizona State's Constantinos Koshis and forced a second set tiebreaker, but fell 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Much like his teammate, Bora Sengul ended his match with a tiebreaker, but Sengul played to a different result. He faced Spencer Brachman, of Arizona State, and won a tight match 6-2, 5-7, 12-10.
Inspired by both his teammates, Mathieu Josserand sent his match to the winner-take-all third set tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (2), 4-6, 10-7 against UC Irvine's Lawee Sherif.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice battled Lucca Liu, of UC Santa Barbara, and also went to a third set tiebreaker in a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 comeback.
Reigning NAIA West Region Rookie of the Year Liam Spiers was consistent in his victory over Cal Poly's Zachary Pellouchoud, earning a 6-4, 6-4 win.
In the consolation round of 16, No. 32-seeded Johannes Seeman faced off against No 29-seeded Luka Mrsic, of UC Santa Barbara, but fell 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 in a heartbreaking loss in his third set tiebreaker.
Lenny Melzer was bested by Sanjith Devineni, of UC San Diego, 6-2, 6-1.
