SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men's golf team wraps up its fall schedule when it travels to compete in the Wolf Pack Classic, Oct. 10-11, at the par-72, Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno, Nevada.
The 54-hole event will be contested over two days with two rounds slated for Monday, beginning with a 9 a.m. PT shotgun start, and the final round set for 9 a.m. PT Tuesday based on the scores of the first two rounds.
The Aztecs, which are 18th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin team ratings, are joined by No. 43 Brigham Young, Colorado, Fresno State, Loyola Marymount, host Nevada, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, San Diego, San Francisco, UCLA and UNLV.
SDSU is coming off a convincing eight-shot victory at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Sept. 23-24, shooting a 16-under 848. It was the fifth tournament win for San Diego State since the spring 2021 season (the Aztecs did not compete in the 2020 fall campaign because of COVID). SDSU started four underclassmen in the five-man lineup but was led by senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) in a tie for fifth out of 104 golfers at 6-under 210. Freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), meanwhile, tied for seventh at 5-under 211, while sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) tied for 14th (-2), freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) tied for 23rd (+2) and sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) tied for 30th (+3).
SDSU also has an eighth-place finish to its credit at the loaded Maui Jim Intercollegiate, Sept. 9-11, at 24-under 816.
San Diego State head coach Ryan Donovan has penciled in the same lineup of Lague, Guezzale, Kowack, Hastings and Oyama, while sophomore Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) will be making his Aztec debut, competing as an individual in the 72-man field.
Lague leads SDSU with a 68.7 stroke average, while Guezzale (69.5), Kowack (69.8), Hastings (71.0) and Oyama (71.2) are right behind. Lague's five rounds below par also pace San Diego State, while his three rounds in the 60s are tied with Kowack for the most on the team.
This will be the first known time the Aztecs are competing at the Wolf Pack Classic. The event came back last year after an 11-year hiatus, running before from 1976 to 2010. The Wolf Pack have won the event a record 10 times, while New Mexico is the defending champion.
Amid beautiful, mature trees and landscaping, Hidden Valley Country Club boasts fantastic views of the mountains and city lights of Reno, Nevada. The course was designed by Billy Bell, Jr. and redesigned by Mike Stark and Dick Bailey in 2001.
Following this weekend's event, SDSU will begin its spring campaign at the Southwestern Invitational, Jan. 30-Feb. 1, at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, California.
