SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis opens their 2023 dual-match season on Saturday against nationally ranked No. 14 USC in Los Angeles at 4 p.m. PT. The Aztecs will play their opening match on the road before hosting their next four at home to open the season.
The Aztecs, fresh off a Mountain West Tournament title and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2022, enter the season with a balanced squad of newcomers and returning talent. The five returning players include senior Tamara Arnold, senior Julia Jordan, senior Alicia Melosch, senior Cecile Morin, and junior Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer. Incoming transfers sophomore Rania Azziz (LSU), senior Dariya Detkovskaya (Oklahoma State), junior Andjela Skrobonja (Florida International University), and junior Andreea Velcea (Florida International University) round out the Aztecs 2023 roster.
The match between the Aztecs and Trojans will be a rematch of the 2022 NCAA tournament first round match, which USC won 4-0.
After a promising end to their 2022 campaign, the Aztecs posted a strong fall competition, with multiple Aztecs winning individual and doubles tournaments throughout the fall. Transfers Detkovskaya and Skrobonja impressed at the USD Intercollegiate Invitational in particular, a field which included mostly Power 5 competition, and won the doubles title.
Individually, four Aztecs won tournaments in the fall. Skrobonja also became the first Aztec to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Southwest Regionals, taking down multiple Power 5 opponents en-route to the semifinals of the event. In total the Aztecs bring back athletes who saw playing time at the No. 1 through 5 slots in the order in 2022.
The Aztecs 19 wins during the 2021-22 season were their most since the 2012-13 season, and their 6-2 record in conference play was the squads best win-percentage since the 2012-13 season as well.
