SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Aztec women's basketball team (20-7, 10-4) cruised to an 80-55 win at San Jose State (3-21, 1-12) Saturday afternoon to earn their 20th win of the year, their most since the 2012-13 season.
"It's a fantastic accomplishment," Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. "It's a testament to the kids and the recruits we've been able to bring in. All the transfers we've brought in have really raised our level of play. Everyone is sacrificing their individual game for the team goal."
SDSU shot 56 percent from the field, had 22 assists on their 28 made buckets and finished with four players in double-digits and two with double-doubles.
Kim Villalobos had 19 points and 11 rebounds while Sophia Ramos had 16 points and a career-high 13 assists, the most assists by an Aztec in 10 years (Chelsea Hopkins). Mercedes Staples had 17 points with five made threes and Yummy Morris was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and had 10 points.
The Aztecs went on a 9-0 run early in the first quarter and then led for the remainder of the game. Ramos and Villalobos combined for 18 of SDSU's 20 first quarter points and SDSU led 20-12 after 10 minutes.
The Spartans pulled within two points midway through the second quarter but then went on a 9-2 lead and would hold an 11-point lead at the halftime break.
In the third quarter SDSU made six shots in a row as part of an 11-0 run to go up 47-29. The Aztecs then started the fourth quarter on a 10-1 run to go up 72-47 and put the game out of reach.
The Spartans were led by Jada Holland's 19 points.
STAT OF THE GAME
The Aztecs shot 56 percent from the floor, 44 percent from three and had assists on 22 of their 28 field goals.
THE NOTE
This was the first time since Feb. 16 of last year that SDSU had two players with double-doubles in the same game. That was Mallory Adams and Kim Villalobos, also against San Jose State.
