SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State softball team continues its 10-game homestand to start the season by hosting Wichita State and the 32nd annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The Aztecs (4-1), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls, first welcome the Shockers (4-1) at 6 p.m. PT Thursday before hosting the three-day, five-team, 12-team Campbell/Cartier Classic with games against UC Riverside (4:30 p.m. PT) and Loyola Marymount (7 p.m. PT) on Friday, and No. 24/24 Oregon (4 p.m. PT) and Utah Valley (6:30 p.m. PT) on Saturday.
San Diego State's Campbell/Cartier Classic is an annual event held in the memory of former Aztec softball players Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier. Campbell and Cartier lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program.
To pay tribute to Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, the San Diego State softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability. The 2023 tournament will be the 32nd annual.
The Aztecs went 4-1 last weekend at the San Diego State Season Kickoff, including three consecutive wins to close out the tournament.
AJ Murphy leads SDSU with a .533 average (8-for-15), while Bella Espinoza is hitting .526 (10-for-19) with team highs of six runs and four stolen bases.
Dani Martinez (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 9.0 IP), Dee Dee Hernandez (2-0, 0.66 ERA, 10.2 IP) and Sara Lehman (1-0, 3.89 ERA, 9.0 IP) have done the bulk of the pitching for San Diego State, while Allie Light (0-1, 7.64 ERA, 1 SV, 3.2 IP) and Cassidy West (0-0, 7.88 ERA, 2.2 IP) have also seen time in the circle.
The Aztecs' two games on Friday will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network (https://goaztecs.com/watch/), while the other games will be live streamed with no commentary (https://www.youtube.com/@SDSUAztecSoftball/).
