SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis hits the road for the third time this spring on Friday when the Aztecs travel north to face Cal. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
The Aztecs (4-2) head into Friday afternoons matchup fresh off of a dominant 4-0 sweep of Long Beach State last time out. The sweep was SDSU's second of the season, having previously beaten UC San Diego 7-0 earlier in the year. The Aztecs other two wins on the year were over two squads who were ranked in the ITA rankings in No. 40 Alabama, and No. 54 Rice. The 4-3 win over Alabama was head coach Peter Mattera's 400th career win on The Mesa. To begin the season SDSU has played four of their six matches against ranked opponents.
Heading into Friday's matchup the Bears are 2-3, but have lost their last three matches. While under .500 on the year Cal has played one of the tougher schedules in the nation. So far to start the year the Bears have played No. 9 NC State, No. 17 San Diego, and No. 23 Miami. Two student-athletes are currently ranked for the Bears as well, as Jessica Alsola heads in to the match at No. 36 nationally, and Katja Wiersholm comes in ranked No. 122 nationally. The duo of Alsola and Wiersholm are also ranked 17th in the country in doubles play.
As for the Aztecs, multiple players head into the match on a winning streak. Both Rania Azziz and Alicia Melosch earned singles wins in the matches against Hawai'i and LBSU last week, with Melosch improving to 5-1 in singles play to start the season. Azziz also posted a 2-0 record in singles play last week, after moving from the sixth spot to the fifth spot in the rotation. Additionally, the ITA singles and doubles rankings came out on Wednesday, and Dariya Detkovskaya remains in the rankings, coming in at 104th nationally. The transfer from Oklahoma State is 5-1 in singles play to begin the year, and picked up a win over Snow Han of USC who was ranked 17th in the nation at the time.
