SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis swept crosstown foe UC San Diego, 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. All six Aztecs won their singles matches and five of them won in straight sets Saturday.
The day started off with doubles play where the Aztecs (2-1) went point-for-point with the Tritons (2-3) before the Aztecs were able to pull away on each court. At the No. 1 slot No. 59 Andjela Skrobonja and Dariya Detkovskaya dominated their match, only losing one game, en-route to a 6-1 win on court one to put the Aztecs in control. Alicia Melosch and Andreea Velcea then secured the doubles point on court three for the Aztecs with a 6-4 win. The other pairing of Tamara Arnold and Rania Azziz were trailing in their match on court two, 4-5 before it went unfinished.
As for singles play five of the six Aztecs who took part earned straight sets win on Saturday. Arnold set the tone for the Aztecs in singles play on court two, only losing one game in her entire match, and ran out a 6-0, 6-1 winner to put the Aztecs up 2-0 and firmly in control of the match. Melosch, fresh off of her match clinching win against Alabama, earned the next point for the Aztecs. She beat Naomi Nguyen on court four in dominant fashion as well, winning 6-1, 6-1, and put SDSU up 3-0. Detkovskaya quickly followed suit to clinch the match for the Aztecs when she also won in straight sets on court three, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 88 Skrobonja continued her perfect streak in dominant fashion again in singles play. She earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles slot and continued the Aztecs win streak on the day, as the Aztecs lead 5-0 with two matches still to play. The matches on court five and six were stretched out but both Aztecs came out victorious. Velcea beat Sophie Pearson of UC San Diego in straight sets as well, winning 6-3, 6-2, but had multiople extended rallies that she was able to win, en-route to a 6-3, 6-2 win, putting SDSU up 6-0. Azziz capped off the perfect day for the Aztecs when she won on court six. Both sets were extremely close for Azziz. She won the first set 7-5, before dropping the second 7-6 (8), before showing tremendous mental strength to comeback and earn the win via the tiebreaker 10-6, and completed the 7-0 Saturday sweep.
