COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State women's tennis' Dariya Detkovskaya has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. This is Detkovskaya's first player of the week honors this season.
Detkovskaya, a transfer from Oklahoma State, garnered the award after going 2-0 in singles play with wins in singles play against No. 61 Tulsa and Furman. In her first match of the week, she went up against Marissa Pennings of Furman at the No. 2 singles slot, and took care of business in straight sets winning 6-0, 6-2. As for her second singles match of the week, Detkovskaya beat Lily Hutchings of No. 61 Tulsa is straight sets as well, 6-3, 6-2. Those two wins improved Detkovskaya's singles record to 8-1 since the start of dual season.
Overall Detkovskaya has had a very solid spring dual season to date. In addition to starting 8-1 in singles play, Detkovskaya has won six of her nine matches in straight sets, including her last three matches. Over those past three matches the senior has won 36 games and only dropped 12 over that same time frame. Additionally, Detkovskaya has wins over three power five programs' individuals this spring. Detkovskaya beat No. 17 in the nation Snow Han of USC in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 12-10, to begin the season, Ole Pitak of Alabama in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 a week later, and most recently topped Katja Wiersholm of Cal in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8.
On the year, Detkovskaya is 15-5 in singles matches dating back to the fall and has won nine of her last 10 matches, with one going unfinished that she was leading in during that time frame. She is also ranked No. 108 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
The Aztecs, who are 6-4 to begin the dual season and have won three of their previous five matches, are back in action on Friday afternoon when they host No. 37 Purdue at the Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PT.
