SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team went up against the No. 7-ranked Harvard Crimson at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday, March 17 in their first match of the San Diego Spring Invitational. The Aztecs played several close matches but could not come down with any victories in the 4-0 loss.
The Scarlet and Black fall to 1-7 this season, while Harvard improves its record to 9-3.
"We look forward to tomorrow's opportunity against another ranked opponent in Tulane," said head coach Gene Carswell after the match. "We gave ourselves a shot at the doubles point today, which is a complete 180 from the last time out with Harvard. With four matches getting pushed to a final 3rd set, we had our opportunity to get some redemption."
In doubles, on the top court, No. 80 Johannes Seeman and Chikaya Sato faced the duo of Harris Walker and Daniel Milavsky. The SDSU duo kept it closer than Monday but fell 7-5. On the third court, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Mathieu Josserand fell to Alan Yim and David Lins 6-2. Alexander Mandma and Bora Sengul were even with Steven Sun and Ronan Jachuck 6-6 on the second court when Harvard clinched the doubles point.
On the top singles court, Seeman (4-4) faced off against No. 27 Walker and battled early, sending the first set to a tiebreaker. However, he was unable to claim a set as Walker emerged victorious 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Playing on the No. 2 court, Sato (2-6) drew No. 11 Henry von Schulenberg and cruised to a 6-1 first set victory. He was unable to close it out, dropping the following sets 6-3, 6-1.
Andre Saleh (1-4) played on the No. 6 court against Yim. He sent the first set to a tiebreaker but fell in straight sets 7-6 (7), 6-4.
On the other courts, Sengul (0-5), Mandma (1-4) and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (1-2) each claimed a set, but the match was clinched before they finished.
Playing on the No. 3 court, Mandma faced Milavsky and took the first set 6-3 but dropped the second 7-5 and trailed 3-1 in the third when the match was called.
On the fourth court, Sengul fell in a close first set to Jachuck 7-5. He fought back to claim the second 6-3 and led 2-1 in the third when the match was decided.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice played on the No. 5 court and took the first set from Valdemar Pape 6-3. He was bested 6-4 in the second and trailed 4-2 in the third when the match was called.
San Diego State faces a quick turnaround time going into its next San Diego Spring Invitational matchup when it will go up against No. 35-ranked Tulane at 11 a.m. PT tomorrow morning at the Aztec Tennis Center.
