SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis earned their fourth win in a row on Saturday morning, beating New Mexico 4-1. The Aztecs dropped the doubles point before earning four straight sets wins to win the match.
After losing the doubles point earlier in the match, the Aztecs (8-4, 1-0 MW) responded in a big way in singles play against New Mexico (7-3, 0-1 MW). SDSU won four straight singles matches, and all in straight sets to clinch the win. Andjela Skrobonja evened the match at 1-1 in dominant fashion on court one, and only dropped two games on the day, winning both the first and second sets by a 6-1 scoreline. Alicia Melosch was almost as dominant on court three, and put the Aztecs on the front foot in the match, winning her match in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
On courts five and six Cecile Morin and Andreea Velcea continued the trend for the Scarlet and Black. Both Aztecs won their first sets 6-4, and put SDSU firmly in the driver's seat to win the match. Velcea then put the Aztecs ahead 3-1, with a 6-3 win in her second set, claiming the third straight sets win for SDSU. Morin put the finishing touches on a singles play sweep for San Diego State, as she also won her second set 6-3, and earned the Aztecs a 4-1 win on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, the Aztecs lineup remained unchanged in doubles play. On court two Velcea and Skrobonja earned another win together as they took down the Lobos pairing 6-2. Julia Jordan and Detkovskaya battled back and forth with their opponents but fell 6-4, and the Lobos tied things up in the doubles competition. The final pairing of Melosch and Rania Azziz were tied at 5-5 in their match before the Lobos pairing earned New Mexico the point with a 7-5 win, giving them a 1-0 lead before singles play.
