SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's Mercedes Staples has been selected to participate in the State Farm College Three-Point Contest and the Team Skills and 3X3U Championships at the Bayou Music Center in downtown Houston March 29-30 as part of the men's final four festivities.
Staples, a fifth-year senior shooting guard from Centerville, Utah, set school records for the best career (41.0%) and single-season three-point percentage (45.5% in 2022-23). Staples was fifth in the nation in three-point percentage this year.
The event will feature 24 men's and women's players, competing together in a variety of team events: the Applebee's Team Shooting Competition, the Celsius Obstacle Course and the TaxAct 3X3U National Championship.This will take place March 29 at 4:30 p.m. PT and then air Sunday April 2 at 7 p.m. PT. on ESPN2.
Building on its history of hosting the 3X3U National Championship, Intersport will stage a women's edition of the event for the first time that will be contested as part of State Farm College Team Skills & 3X3U Championship. The six teams will compete head to head in the Shooting and Relay competitions, while the men and women will face each other as part of the 3X3U Championship. The winning team in each event will earn $5,000, with maximum possible winnings of $15,000.
Staples will team up with Caitlin Bickle (Baylor), Brittany Davis (Alabama) and Keishana Washington (Drexel) in the team skills and 3X3U championships. They will go against Ciaja Harbison (Vanderbilt), Chloe Marotta (Marquette), Paige Robinson (Illinois State) and Bre'Amber Scott (Texas Tech).
The three-point championship is March 30 at 4:30 p.m. PT and will air live on ESPN2. Staples is one of eight competitors and if she wins, she will go against the winner of the men's competition. SDSU head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson (UT Arlington) participated in this event in 1998.
