SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis fell 6-1 to No. 37 USD on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs fell in doubles before coming up just short in singles play.
In a tightly contested doubles point the Aztecs (4-4) battled with the No. 37 Toreros (4-5) for each point in all three matches. The Aztecs third duo if Andjela Skrobonja and Andreea Velcea earned a win to kick things off for the Aztecs, winning 6-3. Tamara Arnold and Dariya Detkovskaya battled back and forth with Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride, but came up just short, falling 6-3 and the doubles point was tied with one match remaining. In that final match, Alicia Melosch and Rania Azziz went back and forth with Kailey Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith of USD but fell 6-4, and USD took the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Despite falling in doubles play the Aztecs came out strongly in the first set of singles play and multiple Aztecs earned first set wins. Detkovskaya continued her winning ways on court three for the Aztecs, earning her sixth singles win in straight sets fashion, 6-4, 6-1, to even the match at 1-1. The other Aztecs battled back and forth with five different Toreros, including three who were nationally ranked. On court one, Skrobonja battled with Colling who is currently ranked 57th in the country, and dominated the first set winning 6-2, before Colling rallied to take the next one, 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-4, re-establishing the USD lead 2-1.
Additionally, four more Aztecs competed hard on Saturday afternoon throughout singles. On court four Melosch fell to Desiatnikov who is ranked 90th nationally, 6-2, 6-4 but went back and forth for each point. Arnold also went point for point with De Las Heras on Saturday, falling 6-4 in the first set and then dropped a tight second set 7-5 as the Toreros opened up a 4-1 lead over SDSU. Velcea fell in her first set of singles 6-0, but rallied back ferociously in the second set, and evend the score at 5-5, before dropping the second set 7-5. In the final match of the day Azziz went toe-to-toe with Evans, who is ranked 71st in the country. The transfer from LSU dropped the first set 3-6, before earning a second set win 6-4 to force a decisive third set. In that third set Azziz battled but came up just short and fell 7-5 in the final set.
