COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State women's tennis' Andjela Skrobonja has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. This is Skrobonja's second player of the week honors this season, and the fourth time in the last five weeks an Aztec has earned the award.
Skrobonja went 4-0 across doubles and singles play last week as the Aztecs swept another road trip over No. 61 Colorado State 4-2, and hosts Wyoming 4-1, to move into a tie for first place in the conference standings. Skrobonja along with doubles partner Dariya Detkovskaya won both of their doubles matches on court two over the weekend. The duo won by a 7-6 (6) scoreline on Friday and followed that up with a 6-1 win on Saturday. As for singles play, Skrobonja swept the weekend on court one, winning both matches in straight sets. She took care of Radka Buzkova of CSU in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 on Friday, and beat Sophie Zehender of Wyoming in straight sets as well on Saturday, winning 6-1, 6-4.
Overall, for the 2023 dual season, Skrobonja has posted an 11-3 record with doubles partner Detkovskaya since the two of them have been paired together, and a 2-0 record in Mountain West play. As for singles play, Skrobonja is 10-4 entering this week's matches. The junior has led the Aztecs to four wins in a row, all on the road, while playing consistently the top competition from throughout the Mountain West. She heads into her next match an impressive 4-0 in Mountain West play, with all of her matches coming at the No. 1 spot in the rotation.
San Diego State heads into its final two home matches of the season with a 12-5 overall record and ranked 42nd nationally in the latest ITA team rankings that were released on Tuesday morning. Last weekend the Aztecs won their third and fourth matches in a row by beating No. 61 Colorado State and Wyoming, putting the Aztecs at 5-1 in conference play and tied for first in the conference standings.
