LAS VEGAS – San Diego State women's tennis begins its journey to repeat as Mountain West tournament champions on Thursday when the No. 3 seed Aztecs take on No. 6 seed Boise State. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. PT and will take place at the Darlington Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
San Diego State won the previous meeting between the schools this season, a 4-2 win at Boise State back on April 2nd.
The Aztecs finished the regular season 14-7, their second highest win tally in the last 10 years, only the 2013 squad that won the MW tournament regular season and advanced to the NCAA championships won more regular season matches (20). SDSU also finished the regular season 7-3 in Mountain West play, and finished third in the regular season conference standings. The Scarlet and Black have advanced to the last two Mountain West tournament finals (contested in 2019 and 2022), including winning the title in 2022 where they advanced to play USC in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
To cap off the regular season, four Aztecs were named to the all-conference teams. Tamara Arnold and Andjela Skrobonja were named to the all-conference singles team, while Alicia Melosch and Dariya Detkovskaya earned a spot on the all-conference doubles team. As a team the Aztecs finished the regular season strongly, winning 10 of their final 13 matches of the dual season. Overall, SDSU played nine ranked teams during the dual season, and won seven of those contests. San Diego State also finished the regular season ranked 55th in ITA weekly poll, and were the highest ranked Mountain West squad.
Arnold finished the dual season with an 11-5 record, and an incredible 7-0 mark in conference play. She led the team in wins in conference play, and earned straight sets wins in six of those seven matches. Additionally, throughout the dual season Arnold won in straight sets nine times, en-route to an overall record of 16-6 across the fall and spring singles seasons. Skrobonja, a transfer from Florida International, enjoyed a breakout season on The Mesa in 2023. The Somber, Serbia native played exclusively at the No. 1 singles spot in the rotation all season, and posted an impressive 11-4 mark in singles play this spring. Skrobonja also went a perfect 5-0 in singles in Mountain West play this spring, all at the No. 1 spot in the order. In those five wins in Mountain West play, Skrobonja earned the win in dominant fashion, winning all of those matches in straight sets. Additionally for the spring season, Skrobonja earned 11 wins and eight of them came in straight sets.
After a stellar campaign in both singles play and doubles play that included knocking off a ranked opponent in singles play, Detkovskaya teamed up with Melosch midway through the MW dual season, and they brought an instant spark to the Aztecs' doubles play. The duo went 3-1 combined on courts one and two in the rotation over the course of the final two weeks to earn the nod.
