PHILADELPHIA, Pa – The Aztec track and field team began competition today at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with the 400m hurdles and 5000m race.
In the first event of the day for the Aztecs, Rhea Hoyte competed in the 400m hurdles. Hoyte finished with a time of 1:00.58, earning a 18th place finish out of 31 participants.
Later in the afternoon, Jessica Kain and Vanessa Cabello both raced in the 5000m. Kain placed 20th with a time of 16:18.63, while Cabello followed in 32nd (16:40.15).
Both Aztecs set new personal bests after their outstanding performances in Thursday's 5000m race and earned spots in SDSU's top 10 all-time best outdoor performances with Kain in fourth and Cabello in fifth.
"That was my first 5K ever so I am super excited for the future with that event," senior Jessica Kain said after the race. "I definitely have room for improvement but I'm happy where I am now."
Kain's performance marks the fastest 5K time by an Aztec in over 40 years, last set by Laurie Binder in 1980.
