CLOVIS, Calif. – The Aztec track and field team wrapped up the final day of the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis, California with a second-place overall team finish with 143.20 points and 12 podium finishes.
The 4x100 relay team made up of Aisha Watt, Jada Moore, Danae Dyer, and Shaquena Foote dominated throughout the event, finishing first with a time of 44.08, breaking the facility record and becoming the fifth fastest in SDSU outdoor history.
In the 1500m finals, senior Jessica Kain earned a second-place finish with a mark of 4:18.43, contributing eight points towards the team score.
Danae Dyer competed in the 100m hurdles, winning her third consecutive Mountain West title with a PR of 13.22. The senior's performance places her as No. 6 all-time in Aztec outdoor history. Freshman Charlize James also had an impressive showing, finishing second, crossing the finish line just behind Dyer with a 13.33 finish. Dyer and James contributed a combined 18 points to the team category.
In the 100m dash finals, the Aztecs earned another first and second place finish courtesy of Jada Moore and Aisha Watt. Moore's performance of 11.42 earned her the Mountain West title, her third consecutive as an Aztec. Watt earned a silver medal after a PR performance of 11.57.
Alex Lomeli competed in the 800m finals, securing a bronze medal and setting a new PR of 2:05.36, all while becoming the second fastest in SDSU outdoor history.
As for the 400m dash, Shaquena Foote placed first with a personal best time of 52.57, adding ten more points to SDSU's overall team score.
Rhea Hoyte represented the Aztecs in the 400m hurdles finals where she won the Mountain West crown with a mark of 58.80 while setting a new personal record in the event.
In the 200m dash finals, three Aztecs competed and earned third, fourth, and fifth place respectively, all earning points towards the team score. Aisha Watt set a new PR with a finish of 23.38 while Jada Moore finished in 23.55 and Shaquena Foote in 23.58.
In the final relay of the day, the Aztecs 4x400 relay team made up of Sydney Bentley, Rhea Hoyte, Aisha Watt, and Shaquena Foote won their heat and took first place overall with a 3:34.97 finish, the 10th best in SDSU outdoor history.
Back at the field events, Simone Johnson earned a silver medal in the triple jump. Johnson jumped 43-03, earning 8 points towards the team total. Dejanae Thompson also competed, setting a PR with her jump of 38-08.75.
Earlier in the day the Aztecs had two athletes compete in the discus throw. Felicia Crenshaw came in eighth and threw 170-8, and Erica Grotegeer threw 157-3 to finish 11th overall. Crenshaw's finish earned one point toward the team score. Sophomore Jenna Fee Feyerabend followed that with a sixth-place finish in the high jump, fresh off of a first place showing in the heptathlon on Thursday, cleared 5-04.25.
