SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis head coach Peter Mattera has announced that two transfers will be joining the SDSU women's tennis program. Myah Petchey of the University of Oregon and Gloria Alogo of the University of North Texas will join the Aztecs women's tennis program this fall.
"We are very excited to welcome both Myah and Gloria to our Aztec tennis family," head coach Peter Mattera said. "They both bring high level Division 1 tennis experience with them to The Mesa. Myah has had some tremendous results at Oregon in both singles and doubles play in her three plus years of experience there. Additionally, she was one of the best players in South Africa before coming to the states to attend university. Gloria had a very successful freshman season at North Texas, as well as in junior tennis in Spain. The two are going to be able to step in right away and have an immediate positive impact on our team which was ranked as high as 40th in the ITA rankings last Spring."
Myah Petchey, a native of London, England, will join the Aztecs after spending the past four seasons at the University of Oregon. At Oregon she amassed over 33 wins over the past four seasons in singles play, while posting an impressive 30 wins in doubles play for the Ducks. During her four years in Eugene, she played in slots two through six in the lineup, but spent the second half of her career at UO playing primarily at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Her best year at UO came in 2021-22 where Petchey was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention honoree and earned 26 wins that season across both doubles and singles play. Prior to playing collegiately Petchey was ranked No. 1 in the under-18 rankings in South Africa at one point while also being ranked as high as No. 179 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings. She won four tournaments on the ITF junior circuit and has represented South Africa four times in the African Junior Championships.
Gloria Alogo out of Mallorca, Spain, will take her talents to The Mesa after playing the past season at the University of North Texas. She posted a 5-2 dual record in singles play in 2023, and played at both the second and third spots in the Mean Green's rotation. She excelled at No. 3 singles where she went 4-2, and won three of her final four singles matches. As for doubles play, she finished 8-2 during dual play, and played at all three doubles spots in the rotation. She went 1-0 at No.1 doubles, 4-1 in the second spot, and 3-1 at the third slot in doubles play. Prior to her time at North Texas, Alogo played with some of the best youth players in Spain. She attended the prestigious Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, became a Spanish National finalist and Madrid Champion as a teenager, earned another scholarship to play at the Lawn Tennis Association where she competed against some of Europe's best, and won the Mallorca Championship twice and the Balearic Championship once.
The two transfers will be added to an already strong roster for the 2022-23 season. SDSU is returning three athletes who played key roles on the 2023 team that went 14-8 and finished 7-3 in conference play. San Diego State's 14 wins in 2023 is tied for the second-most regular season wins in team history (2022 also had 14 regular season wins). Only the 2013 squad that won the MW tournament, regular season, and advanced to the NCAA championships won more regular season matches (20) in a single season. SDSU also finished 55th in the final ITA rankings, and were the highest of four Mountain West teams listed.
