ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The San Diego State men's golf team fired a 14-under-par 274 in the second round to move up five places into fourth on the first day of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Monday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Aztecs, who earlier opened with a 1-over 289 on the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Championship Course, are at 13-under 563 through 36 holes, five behind leading Texas Tech (-18). Host New Mexico is second at -16, while San Francisco is one clear of SDSU in fourth at -13. UNLV is fifth in the 20-team field at -9.
Junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for second out of 104 players through two rounds at 7-under 137. Lague opened with a 1-under 71, then fired a 6-under 66 to move up 19 places into a four-way tie for second with San Francisco's Jakob Melin, TCU's Gustav Frimodt and UNM's Albert Boneta. Lague recorded five birdies with an eagle on the par-5, 544-yard 18th hole against just one bogey in his 66. Texas Tech's Tyran Sanders has a two-shot lead at -9.
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) is a shot back of Lague in a tie for sixth at -6 following rounds of 72 and 66. The 66, which tied a collegiate low for Kowack, matched Lague with five birdies, an eagle on the 18th and a lone bogey.
Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 26th at 1-under 143 following rounds of 71 and 72. Chokprajakchat also eagled No. 18 in his second round of the day.
Junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) bounced back from his opening round 75 with a 71 and is tied for 49th at +2.
Sophomore Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) opened his 2023-24 campaign and is tied for 56th at 3-over 147 after rounds of 76 and 71.
Competing as an individual, senior Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) sits in a tie for 71st at 5-over 149 thanks to an opening 74 and a 75. Ngo's highlight of the day was an eagle in the second round on the par-5, 544-yard first.
The final round is set for 7:45 a.m. MT (6:45 a.m. PT) Tuesday.
