SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team's Chikaya Sato and Alexander Mandma began their weekend in the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic at the Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego. The three-day event features players from SDSU, USD, Boise State, Pepperdine and Navy. The Aztec representatives faced players from Navy in singles and doubles on Friday, the first day of the tournament.
Sato drew Luke Garner. He cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Midshipman.
The other Aztec in the event, Mandma went up against Aniketh Ayinala. After falling 6-3 in the opening set, Mandma bounced back to take the second 6-1. His comeback fell short in the third set when he was dropped 6-2.
In doubles, the pair faced Garner and Sasha Panyan. The back-and-forth match went to a tiebreaker in which neither duo could claim an advantage until the Midshipmen reached 14 points to the Aztecs' 12.
