SAN DIEGO – San Diego State baseball head coach Shaun Cole has unveiled the team's highly anticipated 2024 schedule, featuring a 54-game docket with 27 home dates at Tony Gwynn Stadium. In addition to the ninth annual Tony Gwynn Legacy, the Aztecs will play host to the Mountain West Championship from May 23-26.
Of the 18 different opponents on its 2024 slate, the Aztecs will play 29 games against 10 teams that posted winning records last season, including six apiece against conference rivals Fresno State and New Mexico and three vs. defending MW tournament champion and NCAA regional participant San José State.
In addition, SDSU's schedule features six non-conference foes that finished among the top 100 in the NCAA regular-season RPI last year in Missouri (45), UC Irvine (47), CSUN (74), Hawai'i (76), UC San Diego (84) and Long Beach State (87).
The Aztecs will play two series (home/away) against four Mountain West opponents, Fresno State, Nevada, Air Force and New Mexico, while facing San José State (road) and UNLV (home) in conference weekends just once.
Information on season and single-game tickets, as well as gameday promotions and broadcast schedule will be available at a later date.
San Diego State opens its 2024 schedule with seven straight home games, beginning with a weekend series vs. Portland, Feb. 16-18. The Aztecs own a 2-1 advantage against the Pilots all-time, including a 12-3 home victory in their most recent meeting in 1998. Last season, Portland logged a 31-23 overall record, advancing to the championship game of the West Coast Conference tournament, where it fell to Santa Clara.
After a midweek clash against Big West member CSUN on Feb. 20, the Scarlet and Black will once again co-host the ninth installment of the Tony Gwynn Legacy, Feb. 23-26, battling Missouri, CSU Bakersfield and Utah in succession.
San Diego State sports a 1-1-1 ledger in three previous encounters with the Tigers, dropping a 3-1 decision in the last game between the two schools at USD's home tournament in 2008. In addition, the Aztecs will square off against the Roadrunners for just the second time in program history after recording a 5-4 triumph at home in 2018. Meanwhile, SDSU will be renewing acquaintances with the Utes after the teams split two games in the 2022 edition of the Tony Gwynn Legacy.
The Aztecs will head up the freeway to face UC Riverside in their first road game of the campaign on Feb. 27 before opening Mountain West play with a three-game series at Fresno State, March 1-3. The teams played each other for just one weekend set last year, with the Bulldogs taking two of three games in Fresno.
Following its Central Valley excursion, SDSU returns to The Mesa to open a five-game homestand, starting with consecutive encounters against local adversaries San Diego (March 5) and UC San Diego (March 6). The Aztecs will then dive back into MW play with a three-game series vs. Nevada, March 8-10. The Aztecs won two of three games against the Wolf Pack at home last season in the lone series between the two clubs.
After a rematch with UCR at Tony Gwynn Stadium on March 12, SDSU will play 12 of its next 16 games on the road, beginning with a three-game conference set at Air Force, March 15-17. The teams split six meetings last year, with each side capturing two of three contests at their respective home parks.
The Aztecs will add to their frequent flyer mileage the ensuing weekend when they travel to the Aloha State for a three-game non-conference series with Hawai'i, March 22-24, in Honolulu. SDSU will be jetting off to O'ahu for the first time since facing the Rainbow Warriors in a four-game set to open the 2006 campaign. The Aztecs have emerged triumphant over UH in two of the last three meetings at Tony Gwynn Stadium, including a 3-2 victory in 2023.
San Diego State will be offered a brief respite from the road when it plays host to New Mexico in a three-game MW series, March 28-30. The Aztecs have had the Lobos' number in recent years, winning 14 of the last 15 games, including a dramatic sweep on the final home weekend of the 2023 campaign that clinched a share of the Mountain West regular-season championship for the Scarlet and Black.
SDSU will embark on a coastal odyssey the following week, traveling to the San Luis Obispo for back-to-back non-conference games, April 2-3, before continuing north to Silicon Valley for a weekend series at defending MW tournament champion San José State, April 5-7. The Aztecs took two of three games against the Mustangs on the Central Coast the last time the two teams played in 2018 and were scheduled for a return visit to CP's Baggett Stadium in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the remainder of that season to be canceled after 16 games.
SDSU returns home for the first of two non-league battles with Long Beach State on April 9, before heading across town the following evening, April 10, for a rematch with UC San Diego at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. The Aztecs did not face the Dirtbags last season after sweeping a home-and-away series in 2022, winning by respective scores of 5-1 and 5-4. The Scarlet and Black will drive up to Long Beach for the return engagement on April 16.
The Aztecs return to conference play with a three-game home set against UNLV in the lone series between the two MW foes, April 12-14. SDSU claimed two series victories against the Rebels last season, highlighted by a big 28-8 romp in Las Vegas on March 4, 2023.
Following the aforementioned excursion to Long Beach, San Diego State will square off against another Big West opponent UC Irvine in a three-game non-conference series, April 19-21. The Aztecs will head up the freeway to Orange County for two games at Anteater Park on Friday and Sunday of that weekend, sandwiched around a Saturday evening clash at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
SDSU will head down Interstate 8 for a rematch with the Toreros at USD's Fowler Park on April 23 to open a five-game road trip. From there, the Aztecs will journey to the Land of Enchantment for a three-game MW series with New Mexico at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque, April 26-28, before closing the month with a day trip to the San Fernando Valley for another return engagement, this time at CSUN on April 30.
As the calendar flips pages, San Diego State will engage conference opponents for three consecutive weekends to close out the regular season. The Aztecs will play host to Fresno State (May 3-5) and Air Force (May 10-12) before heading to the Silver State to battle Nevada (May 16-18).
After a one-year hiatus, the Mountain West Championship returns this season and will be conducted at Tony Gwynn Stadium, May 23-26. The top four teams in the MW regular-season standings will qualify for the double elimination tournament, with the winner receiving an automatic berth into NCAA regional competition.
SDSU has hosted the Mountain West Championship on five previous occasions, most recently after the 2022 season. The Aztecs have taken home six MW tournament crowns in program history in 2000, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018.
Despite a 24-29 overall record, San Diego State overcame an 0-5 start to capture a share of the Mountain West regular-season championship with an 18-11 ledger in conference play last year, marking the Aztecs' third such title and first since 2004.
