LOS ANGELES – The San Diego State men's tennis team began its final tournament of the fall season on Friday. SDSU sent Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice, Alexander Mandma, Robin Parts and Chikaya Sato to Los Angeles for the Kramer Collegiate Classic. The three-day tournament is played on the USC campus.
One of three Aztecs to face a Cal Bear on Friday, Parts went up against Jonathan Irwanto. He was consistent in a 6-4, 6-4 victory. In the quarterfinals, Parts smoked UC San Diego's Carson Lee 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Tomorrow, he will play third seeded Karl Kazuma Lee, of USC.
Sophomore Gonzalez Fitzmaurice drew Cal's Ethan Schiffman. He took the first set 6-2 to earn an early lead. After he dropped the second set 6-4, the third set went to a tiebreaker. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice could not close out the Golden Bear, falling 7-6 (7-4). He will go up against Oregon's Lachlan Robertson in the consolation bracket.
The only SDSU player to not face a Golden Bear, Mandma went up against UCLA's Spencer Johnson. Similar to his teammate, he claimed the first set but by the score 6-3. Mandma also struggled to close out his opponent, as he was bested 6-3, 6-1 over the final two sets. He will look to bounce back against fifth seeded Noah Berry, of Cal Poly, in the consolation bracket.
Sato drew John Kim. Both sets were close but went to the Golden Bear 7-5. Sato will face UC San Diego's Zachary Pellouchoud in tomorrow's consolation.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Sato played doubles against UC Santa Barbara's Luka Mrsic and Conrad Brown but fell 8-3.
Parts and Mandma are the top seed in the doubles bracket and had a first-round bye. They will go up against UCLA's Spencer Johnson and Emon Van Loben Sels in the quarterfinals.
