SAN DIEGO – San Diego State hosted a record number of athletes at their annual Red and Black All-Comers Meet on Saturday with nearly 700 competitors in action on the Choc Sportsman Oval at the Aztrack Sports Deck. The meet served as the first of USATF's Summer Nights Series that will run monthly through July of 2024.
The 697 total competitors were more than a hundred more than last year's number of 557 athletes. The field consisted of participants from the San Francisco Bay Area, California Central Valley, Los Angeles Basin, Las Vegas, and Hawai'i. At least 10 high schools around southern California had unattached athletes participating along with 23 different track clubs. The most populous event of the day was the 60m dash which saw 121 men and 103 women race in the sprint event.
Some of the most notable participants included Chris Adamson, a blind runner, competing in both the 60m and 150m dashes. Paralympian, World Record holder and Survivor competitor Kelly Bruno raced in the 5000m run alongside another Paralympian, Bryan Reynolds, who added a third world record to his mantle in the event.
The meet would not have been possible, of course, without the more than 60 officials, meet staff, and volunteers who spent their Saturday working on the SDSU Sports Deck.
Red and Black Intrasquad
In the Red versus Black portion of the meet, team red came out victorious with 68 points to team black's 58. The red team won nine of the 15 events in the intrasquad competition. All San Diego State student-athletes competed unattached.
Thaila Wilson was the high point winner with a total of 19 points setting a new record by one point, surpassing Allison Reaser's 13-year old record.
Xiamara Young set a meet record of her own with a long jump mark of 5.71m (18-09.00), besting Lisa-Anne Barrow's meet best by less than a one centimeter (half inch) set at the 2017 Red and Black Meet.
