SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's basketball team (11-8, 2-4) lost to No. 25/23 UNLV (15-1, 5-0) 67-60 Wednesday in front of 2,908 fans for SDSU's Field Trip game.
"I was proud of how we competed," Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. Our defense looked good in the first half against a good offensive team, and we ended up keeping them to almost 20 points under their average."
The Aztecs hung with the Rebels, who are 46-3 over the last two seasons, all day and were within two points in the fourth quarter before UNLV closed out the game on a run.
Kim Villalobos recorded her fourth double-double in the last five games, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds, a career-high four blocks, three assists and three steals.
"Kim's doing so much for us. She's helping bring the ball up, she's scoring the ball, rebounding, blocking shots, she's doing a little bit of everything," Terry-Hutson praised. "But what's fun to watch is everybody knows what she's going to do and she's still able to do it. She's just a tough kid that's not afraid of the moment, and she made some big shots for us today."
Adryana Quezada led SDSU in scoring with 18 points. She also collected eight rebounds and drew nine fouls.
The first half was a defensive battle. The Aztecs held the Rebels to just five points on 2-for-16 shooting in the second half and took a three-point lead into the locker room at the half.
UNLV scored the first seven points in the second half and then never gave up the lead. The Rebels would extend their lead to 11 points, but SDSU made a run early in the fourth quarter to pull within two points twice.
The Rebels then went on a 15-4 lead and made 10 of their 12 fourth quarter free throws.
