SAN DIEGO – San Diego State track and field began competition in Seattle on day one of the UW Invitational with four distance student-athletes all running. All four etched their names into the Aztec record books including a school record from Jessica Kain.
Kain ran in the third heat of the 3,000m run crossing the line in 9:32.77 to break the SDSU record previously set back in 2004. It was her first ever indoor 3,000m race in her SDSU career. She placed 12th overall in the field of 83 student-athletes and fourth in her heat.
Vanessa Cabello also ran in the 3,000m posting a time of 9:51.56 in heat two. The mark goes as a new PR for the junior and ranks third-fastest in program history. She finished 41st overall and fifth in her heat. The third and final Aztec in 3,000m run was Eva Rethmeier. Competing in her first track meet as an Aztec, she ran a 10:04.03 to finish 59th overall and second in the first heat. The time goes as the fourth-fastest 3,000m time in SDSU history.
The trio now owns three of the four fastest 3,000m times in San Diego State.
The afternoon started in the 5,000m with Amber Elias as the lone Aztec runner in the event. Posting a new personal best of her own, she crossed the finish line in 18:21.69 for the second-best mark in program history.
