SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State lost a pair of close games on the second day of the 33rd annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (4-5) were edged by rv/No. 25 Texas A&M, 1-0, in the opener before falling to No. 17/14 Oregon, 2-0, in the nightcap.
SDSU received superb pitching from the trio of Allie Light, Cece Cellura and Dee Dee Hernandez, but on offensive managed only two hits over the two shutout losses.
In the opener, Allie Enright doubled in Trinity Cannon in the top of the fourth inning for the Aggies' (8-0) only run in a 1-0 win over San Diego State.
The Aztecs got a pair of runners in the sixth as Micaela Macario walked with one out and stole second before Mac Barbara was intentionally walked with two outs. TAMU pitcher Emiley Kennedy, however, got pinch hitter Jade Ignacio to ground out to first to keep SDSU off the scoreboard.
Katie Goldberg led off the seventh with an infield single and AJ Murphy moved pinch runner Julie Holcomb into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Holcomb got to third on a groundout by Macey Keester, but Kennedy (4-0) got pinch hitter Angie Yellen to ground out to third to end the game.
Light (1-1) was the tough luck loser after allowing one run on five hits and three walks over six innings, while striking out six. Hernandez gave up one hit in the seventh to keep San Diego State in the game.
Kate Farren and Goldberg each had the Aztecs' two hits, while Barbara and Macario drew walks.
In the nightcap vs. the Ducks (6-4), SDSU once again managed only two hits - a leadoff single by Bella Espinoza and a one-out double by Ignacio in the fifth.
In that fifth inning, Ignacio was replaced by Holcomb, but UO starting pitcher Mogan Scott got Cali Decker to fly out to left field and AJ Murphy to ground out to shortstop to end the threat.
Cellura (1-1) lost for the first time this season, yielding two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks over four innings. Light relieved Cellura to start the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings with three hits given up, while striking out one.
THE NOTE
San Diego State is off to a 4-5 start, but seven of its nine opponents have come against teams that made the 2023 NCAA tournament, including five nationally ranked squads in one of the two major polls (USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball).

Tonight's two games were the quickest of the season for the Aztecs with the Texas A&M game lasting 1:53 and the Oregon contest going 1:41.
STAT OF THE DAY
SDSU was shut out twice on the same day for the first time since March 8, 2019 (L, 6-0, to Boston Univ. and 8-0 to Liberty).
