MORAGA, Calif. – The San Diego State men's tennis team played the second leg of its Bay Area road trip on Sunday after Saturday's 4-3 win over San Francisco. The Aztecs crossed the Bay Bridge to the East Bay to play Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. SDSU took the doubles point and the first three singles matches to finish to win 4-0. The win caps off a perfect 4-0 week for the Aztecs including three shutout wins. The victory is also the fifth consecutive one for San Diego State.
The Scarlet and Black improve to 7-1 while the Gaels fall to 1-5.
"Great job by our Aztec men in securing a hard-fought 4-0 road win," said Head Coach Gene Carswell after the win. "We helped ourselves by taking the doubles point and setting the tone for the day. Robin Parts continues to find ways to lead by example, sweeping all his singles and doubles matches on the weekend."
In doubles, Alexander Mandma and Parts (6-0) played on the top court against Carlos Ramos Membrives and Diego Jarry. They won 6-2 to stay perfect on the season. Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman (4-4) faced Thibaud Maxant and Mathis Moysan on court No. 2. They were bested 6-3. On the third court, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Bora Sengul (4-1) battled Paulo Hugo Etchecoin and Liam Carpenter and cruised to a 6-1 win to earn the doubles point.
In singles, Parts (6-0) faced Hugo Etchecoin on the fifth court. After dropping the first set 6-2, Parts battled back to blank his opponent 6-0 in the second and win the deciding set 6-4 to make it 2-0.
The winner of the clinching point in Saturday's match, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (4-2) went up against Maxant on court No. 4. He was also bested in the first set, falling 6-4 before bouncing back to win his next two sets as well 6-2, 6-4.
Facing Jarry on the third court, Sato (4-3), too, fell 6-4 in the first set. He came out firing after that, dropping just one game the rest of the match, winning 6-1, 6-0 to clinch a 4-0 victory for SDSU.
Three matches did not finish due to SDSU clinching the match. On court No. 2, Seeman (2-4) faced Moysan. He won 6-3 in the first set but was bested 7-5 in the second. The deciding third set was even at four games when the Aztecs won. Sengul (2-2) played on the top court against Ramos Membrives. The two split the first two sets with the Gael winning 6-2 in the first and the Aztec taking the second 6-4. Ramos Membrives led 3-2 in the third when San Diego State clinched the victory. Liam Spiers (0-0) and Pierre Lieutaud matched up on court No. 6. Lieutaud won the first set 7-5 with the second even at four when the match was called.
San Diego State returns to the Aztec Tennis Center, where it is 5-0, to face another West Coast Conference opponent, Loyola Marymount, on Thursday, February 29.
